In this story:

The No. 11 Alabama Crimson Tide is in control of the SEC West after navigating its first three conference games. This weekend it returns home after two straight road games for homecoming against the Arkansas Razorbacks.

While the defense has largely played lights out this season, outside of a fourth-quarter meltdown against the Texas Longhorns, it'll face a unique challenge this week in Razorbacks quarterback KJ Jefferson.

Jefferson stands at 6-3, 247 pounds and is one of the most physically imposing quarterbacks in the SEC.

The Crimson Tide's already played quarterbacks with some decent speed, in USF's Byrum Brown and Ole Miss's Jaxson Dart, plus sees one with good size every day in practice (Jaylen Milroe is listed at 6-2, 220 pounds). However, Jefferson also has significant power, making him a challenge for defenders to sack in the pocket, or take down in the open field.

"I don’t think you change your mindset. If you go against anybody, you expect everybody — you have to finish through contact," said Alabama defensive lineman Justin Eboigbe on Monday. "The same way dealing with KJ. He’s not going to just go down on one hit. You can’t just arm-tackle him. He’s a big guy. There’s a lot of great people that play in this conference, and you have to have the same respect for everybody."

Jefferson is one of the most experienced quarterbacks in the SEC, having logged 38 appearances across five seasons of action for the Razorbacks. He's passed for over 7,000 yards in his career and has tallied 60 touchdown passes with just 16 interceptions. Additionally, he's run for 1,565 yards with another 20 touchdowns coming on the ground.

The Razorbacks haven't won an SEC contest this season and come into Bryant-Denny Stadium on a four-game losing streak, but Jefferson's capabilities give the Hogs a puncher's chance in this weekend's matchup.

"It always comes back to not rushing past the quarterback, having great gap integrity when rushing, then on top of that, you may have a defensive plan, as far as like, when they run the read option, where somebody has the running back and somebody has the quarterback," Eboigbe said. "In that situation, the defensive end has to sit and force the quarterback to make a decision. If he gives the ball up, that’s not your priority, but the other guy. So just being on the same page, and I feel like we’ll be really successful if everybody does just that."

Last year, Jefferson was limited to 13-for-24, 155 passing yards and one touchdown, plus had 17 rushing attempts for 38 yards. Alabama would probably take those numbers right now heading into this matchup. Two years ago, he threw for 326 yards and three touchdowns at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

No. 11 Alabama takes on Arkansas on Saturday at 11 a.m. The game will be televised on ESPN and serves as the Crimson Tide's homecoming for the 2023 season.
