TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama football is in the beginning of a new era, with the program's 28th head coach in Kalen DeBoer being on the job for now nearly two months.

Throughout that short span, DeBoer has made a number of appearances on various shows throughout sports media. On Wednesday morning, he joined The Next Round live from Mal Moore Athletic Facility in Tuscaloosa to discuss the past few weeks on the job.

During his interview, The Next Round asked DeBoer what his perception of Alabama football was before he took the job, and what it is now that he's running the program.

"The perception was just that the tradition, the history, the pride, it’s there through the championships," DeBoer said. "But there was always this understanding of how things were done, and they were done the right way. Through discipline, through hard work, through physicality on the football field. All those pieces, whether they were core values or just the style of play. You always look to the champions and those who are the best of the best."

DeBoer said that as Alabama's prominence continued through his coaching career, he always looked to Nick Saban even though they had not yet met.

"There were so many, over the years, Coach Saban quotes, comments, videos, things that you’d see through Alabama football," DeBoer said. "Breaking down film, you know, you’re always stealing from everyone, the red zone throws or whatever it might be, you’re always taking that. Alabama football was always a part of those things too."

DeBoer remained happy and optimistic about what he and his new staff have begun in Tuscaloosa over just a few weeks, as they work to continue the path Saban set the program on.

"It’s been amazing," DeBoer said. "There’s great people, they made it all work starting with Coach Saban. He surrounding himself with great people that were extremely talented. He kept the direction, and that’s what we’re doing here now.”
