The Tigers' talent roster is not where Hugh Freeze wants it to be.

Freeze spoke with the media on Tuesday afternoon and was asked what the biggest surprise about the program has been since arriving on campus seven months ago.

Freeze was very honest with his answer.

"I don't want to be negative. Just- it was far from what I believe an Auburn roster should look like," Freeze said. "You know, recruiting has been a little more challenging than I thought for Auburn because what I believe Auburn should be, and what is proven it can be. I mean, it's one of six teams that's played in two national championship games in the last 12 years or so or 13 years. So I mean, it's pretty recent and there's a lot of things we battle in recruiting a little bit that I don't think are true any longer anyway. It may have been before I went here. I don't know."

After bringing in one of the best transfer portal classes in the nation, Freeze's roster looks a tad different now - but the talent level isn't where he wants it to be for the future.

"I mean, you know, I think Auburn can be great obviously," Freeze said. "I think we will be able to close the gap on the ones who were doing it at a very, very, very high level right now. I think the ‘24 to ‘25 class will probably tell that story."
