Former BYU Transfer Target Re-Opens Recruitment

Keelan Marion had an offer from BYU before he committed to ECU

BYU continues to recruit the transfer portal in search of difference makers. The Cougars have targeted linebackers, offensive lineman, wide receivers, defensive backs, and more to improve the 2023 roster. One position that has been heavily recruited is wide receiver. Offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick told the media that BYU was down as many as three or four scholarship wide receivers at the end of Spring camp. Since then, BYU has added former Easter Michigan wideout Darius Lassiter. After adding Lassiter, the Cougars continued to look for at least one more wide receiver transfer.

One wide receiver that BYU targeted a few weeks ago was former UConn wideout Keelan Marion. Marion received an offer from BYU before he took a visit to East Carolina and ultimately committed to the Pirates. He never signed with ECU, however, and on Tuesday, Marion announced that he is opening up his recruitment.

Marion was a sophomore at UConn last season. He suffered an injury against Utah State that kept him out for most of the season. In 2021 as a freshman, Marion led UConn in receiving. He racked up 474 yards on 28 catches including 5 touchdowns. Those numbers are more impressive in context - UConn struggled to find consistent production at quarterback that season. The Huskies played five different quarterbacks and threw for less than 2,000 yards. In total, Marion accounted for 24% of the receiving production. For context, Puka Nacua led the Cougars in receiving in 2022 and he accounted for 19% of BYU's receiving production. Marion also occasionally returned punts and kicks for the Huskies.

Marion is an intriguing prospect because he brings a unique skillset to the table. BYU has multiple big-bodied wide receivers in Chase Roberts, Keanu Hill, and Darius Lassiter. Marion, listed at 6'0, is a smaller wide receiver that is able to get open by using his quickness and strength at the line of scrimmage. His skillset would be very complimentary to the other receivers in the room.

Stay tuned for more transfer portal updates in the coming weeks.
