Utah Transfer Simi Moala Brings Experience to BYU

On Tuesday, former Utah offensive tackle Simi Moala joined Ben Criddle on ESPN 960 and announced his intentions to play for BYU this Fall. Moala, who started in 18 games for Utah, has been rumored to be heading to BYU for the last several months. He officially confirmed those rumors and made his intentions public on Tuesday.

Moala brings P5 experience and a decorated resume to BYU. At Utah, Moala appeared in 21 games for the Utes and started 18 games. According to Pro Football Focus, he has played nearly 1,300 snaps in his collegiate career. He split his time between left and right tackle.

As a redshirt freshman in 2019, Moala played in all 14 games for the Utes, starting in 12 games at right tackle. He was an honorable mention Pac-12 All Conference selection after the season. In 2020, he was named to the Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll.

Moala entered the transfer portal after the 2021 season. He committed to Jackson State for the 2022 season where he participated in Spring camp. Between Spring camp and Fall camp, Moala found out that his wife was expecting their second child. He decided to take a step back from football to focus on his family. After taking off the 2022 season, BYU offered him a roster spot for the 2023 season.

Moala signed with Utah as a defensive end. Once he arrived in Salt Lake, he was moved to the offensive side of the ball where he found a home at tackle.

Moala joins a deep offensive line room that will presumably start Kingsley Suamataia and Caleb Etienne at the tackle spots. At worst, Moala is a depth piece in case of injury. At best, he's able to shake off the rust of missing a season and push for a spot in the two-deep.
