On Saturday evening, Weber State linebacker transfer Jack Kelly committed to BYU. Kelly, who has two years of eligibility remaining, was recruited by a variety of P4 schools after he entered the transfer portal. Kelly was on campus this weekend for an official visit and he committed on the visit.

As a sophomore at Weber State last season, Kelly led the Wildcats with 8.5 sacks. He was tied for second for the most sacks in the Big Sky conference. He also had 57 tackles, 4 forced fumbles, 5 pass break-ups, and 1 interceptions. He was named to the All-Conference Big Sky first team after the season.

As a redshirt freshman in 2022, Kelly played in all 13 games for the Wildcats. Per the Weber State website, he finished his freshman campaign with 28 tackles, 8 tackles for loss and six sacks which ranked fifth in the Big Sky. He also had one forced fumble and one pass breakup.

BYU had a lot of success with Weber State transfers Eddie Heckard and Kamden Garrett in 2023. Kelly will look to continue that trend and he will compete for a starting spot right away. His knowledge of Jay Hill's scheme should help him get acclimated quickly.

Excluding kickers, Jack Kelly is the first transfer commitment of the 2024 cycle. The Cougars will continue to recruit the transfer portal over the following weeks to bring in difference makers. The greatest transfer need is at the most important position: quarterback. It's possible that BYU's starting quarterback in 2024 is not on the roster yet.
