BYU and offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick got their guy. On Sunday, three-star quarterback and Texas native Noah Lugo committed to the Cougars. Lugo, who was previously committed to UTSA, announced his commitment on social media after taking a visit to Provo last month. He also held competing offers from Indiana, Tulane, Bowling Green, and a host of smaller schools.

Lugo is a true dual-threat quarterback that preps at Eaton High School in Haslet, Texas. As a junior last season, Lugo racked up 30 total touchdowns and nearly 2,700 yards of total offense. Listed at 6'2, he has a strong arm that can make throws at all levels of the field, and he has the running ability to punish defenses for long runs. Lugo tells Cougs Daily that BYU likes his ability to stress the defense with both his arm and legs.

If BYU can develop Lugo into an efficient passer at the Power Five level, his ability to extend plays and make plays with his feet will make him a very valuable addition to BYU's quarterback room.

For Lugo, the coaching staff, the Power Five affiliation, and the academics made the difference. BYU offers civil engineering and construction management, exactly what Lugo is hoping to study. On his visit, he met with an academic advisor and toured the campus.

His visit in July concluded with a meeting with offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick. That meeting stood out as his favorite part of the visit. "We just kept going back and forth about plays and stuff like that," Noah said in an earlier interview. "It lasted for about three hours."

BYU's consistent ability to create chunk plays stood out to during the film review. "They certainly use the quarterback to run the ball a decent amount, but at the same time, they won't be afraid to take the top off," Lugo said. "They have big plays pretty much two to three times a quarter...obviously you want to be in an offense where you put points on the board, and then being one of the highest-powered offenses in the country is definitely a plus."

BYU has had success with dual-threat quarterbacks under Aaron Roderick, meaning Lugo wouldn't have to rewrite the script of successful quarterback play in Roderick's offense. The Cougars are hoping he can follow a similar trajectory as Jaren Hall. Jaren Hall arrived as a raw, athletic quarterback that developed into a great passer at BYU. Hall totaled nearly 7,000 yards of total offense and 61 total touchdowns including 800 yards on the ground. Hall was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the 2023 NFL Draft.

BYU has a few quarterbacks committed in the 2024 class, but Lugo is the only one that will enroll for the 2024 season.
