Texas DB Matthias Leach Signs with BYU After Low-Profile Recruitment

Some BYU fans might not recognize the name of BYU signee Matthias Leach. The three-star safety from Texas signed with the Cougars on Wednesday after a very low-profile recruitment. Leach picked up competing offers from Utah State, Texas State, Louisiana, and Miami (Ohio) during his recruitment.

Leach picked up an offer from BYU back in November. On the same day, he quietly updated his bio to reflect his commitment to the Cougars. Most recruits post on social media when they commit. Not Leach - he was comfortable keeping things low-key. He came to BYU for an official visit earlier this month and reaffirmed his commitment to the Cougars.

So who is Matthias Leach? He's a fast, physical safety that is listed at 6'3 and 175 pounds. He was identified by BYU defensive coordinator Jay Hill after making noticeable improvements from his junior year to his senior year. Hill has a proven ability to find under-the-radar prospects and turn them into great college players, specifically in the defensive backfield.

There's a lot to like about Leach's potential in Jay Hill's defense. He has great closing speed and he loves to come down hill and hit. Safety is a position of need in this class which will give him the opportunity to make the depth chart early in his BYU career. You can check out his senior film below.

Leach is the third member of the 2024 class from Texas. He is joined by quarterback Noah Lugo and fellow defensive back Jonathan Kabeya.
