Alec Pierce: 'Glad' to get 'Overwhelmed in May OTAs'

CINCINNATI — Former Bearcats wide receiver Alec Pierce is an early star at Indianapolis Colts training camp, and his level of competition is bringing out the best in him. Pierce is used to facing top-tier corners after battling the Coby Bryant/Sauce Gardner duo for the past few seasons—but former Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore is a different animal.

“A lot of times, he knows what route I’m running before I even run it," Pierce said to The Athletic about the two-time All-Pro cornerback. "Just based on like splits or how I’m stemming and stuff like that. So that’s wild. It’s crazy how smart he is as a player.”

Gilmore is a tough matchup, but it should only make Pierce better as he continues to look like a starting option in the Colts' wide receiver room. Pierce went on to say he felt overwhelmed by the expansive Colts playbook at first, but he's getting it more under control now.

“It was very overwhelming in OTAs, B=but obviously you have more time on your hands — you know, weekends and stuff like that — to really get that down,” he said. “So I really think I was more overwhelmed back in May, and I’m glad for that now.”
