Cincinnati Secondary Adds Virginia Tech Transfer Cornerback Derrick Canteen

Cincinnati is trying to bounce back from the worst season this century by addressing its biggest weakness.

CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Bearcats secondary is getting a major boost over the past few days as Virginia Tech cornerback Derrick Canteen is committing to the program.

Canteen was elite defending the run this past season after transferring from Georgia State. He tallied 42 tackles, one interception, and five pass breakups across 418 snaps.

It was good enough for a 69.5 overall PFF grade and a 91.5 run defense mark.

He has one year of eligibility remaining after playing nearly split time at outside and slot cornerback in 2023 (326 total snaps between the two). This adds to names like Ormanie Arnold, Kye Stokes, Logan Wilson, and Mehki Miller that Cincinnati brought in to compete on the back end.

The Bearcats' biggest weakness from 2023 is getting a nice lift from the transfer portal.
