Luke Fickell Named Home Depot Coach of the Year

Fickell has the second-best win rate of any UC football coach in history.

CINCINNATI — Luke Fickell needs to make room in the trophy case. Home Depot announced that Fickell is the 2021 Coach of the Year, joining Brian Kelly (2009) as the only UC coaches to win the award.

He will be honored at the 31st annual Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday at 7 p.m. on ESPN.

A three-time AAC Coach of the Year, Fickell is on one heck of a run at Cincinnati. He's lost just 14 games in five seasons and has the second-highest win rate of any Cincinnati coach that lasted more than one year. Kelly finished his tenure winning 85% of the time, while Fickell sits at 77.4%.

He is game planning for the biggest test yet over those five years. Cincinnati (+13.5) is the largest underdog of any team to play in a 2021 bowl game. Fickell and the Bearcats take on big-bad Alabama in the Cotton Bowl on Dec. 31 at 3:30 p.m. ET with a National Championship invit on the line.
