West Florida Announces Jump To Division I, Becomes Newest FCS Football Program

After reports surfaced last week, West Florida officially announced a move to the Division I level on Thursday.
The Argonauts will compete in the UAC in football, with all other sports competing in the ASUN. The UAC now has eight members as West Florida joins Abilene Christian, Austin Peay, Central Arkansas, Eastern Kentucky, North Alabama, Tarleton State, and West Georgia.
"This transition represents the next chapter in the evolution of our athletics program and a testament to the dedication of our student-athletes, coaches, staff and supporters," UWF Athletic Director Dave Scott said.
"As we prepare for Division I competition, we remain focused on building champions for life. We look forward to growing our tradition of success and welcoming our fans and partners to be part of this exciting journey."
West Florida only started playing football in 2016, but has had a ton of success very quickly at the Division II level. The Argonauts have won over 70% of their games, including making six appearances in the Division II playoffs.
In only their 2nd season, the Argonauts made a run to the Division II national championship, losing to Texas A&M-Commerce (Now East Texas A&M). West Florida then went on to win the 2019 Division II national championship, defeating Minnesota State in McKinney, Texas.
The Argonauts are led by head coach Kaleb Nobles, who will be entering his 4th season as head coach. Nobles has compiled a 25-9 overall record over his three seasons, including two Division II playoff appearances. He was named the GSC Co-Coach of the Year in 2025.
"Our transition to Division I marks a historic step forward for UWF and reflects the momentum, ambition and excellence that define our community," UWF President Manny Diaz Jr. said.
"This milestone is about more than athletics — it represents expanded opportunities for our students, greater national visibility, and a continued commitment to providing an outstanding educational experience. I am proud of the work that has brought us to this moment and excited for the future we are building together."
A new era.

During the three-year NCAA reclassification process, West Florida will not be eligible for NCAA postseason tournaments, including the FCS Playoffs. They will still be eligible to compete for the UAC championship.
The Argonauts will also pay a $2 million Division I entry fee. They become the 4th FCS program located in Florida, joining Bethune-Cookman, Florida A&M, and Stetson.
The university recently announced a new $50 million football stadium, named Darrell Gooden Stadium. They broke ground on Feb. 11 and will aim to complete the project for the 2027 football season. It will be a 7,500-seat stadium, featuring suites, modernized amenities, and club areas.
