Kirby Smart on Georgia's Defensive Line: "I wouldn't trade our group for any group in the country."

Georgia head football coach Kirby Smart had some words of praise for his defensive line group on Tuesday.

One of the fundamental tenets of football is stopping the run. Georgia head coach Kirby Smart has always prided himself on having disciplined defenses that specialize in just that. From 2019-2022, Georgia ranked first in run defense.

That number regressed in 2023, with Georgia falling to 20th. Entering 2024, the defensive line isn't necessarily a spot for concern, but it's definitely piqued a lot of people's interest. In his weekly press conference on Tuesday, Smart offered some praise to that group.

"I'm not down on our run defense, we are not as good as we were [in 2021], but we're better than we'd been a lot of other years. So I mean, there's the scales of that. In terms of that, I wouldn't trade our group for any group in the country, in terms of defensive line groups. And as a collective whole. We've got a group that can get the job done."

Losing Jordan Davis, Travon Walker, and Jalen Carter is an almost impossible task for a defensive line unit to overcome, but Georgia is still trying to find a couple of guys to standout. Fortunately, they have a great offensive line group to go against and cut their teeth in the trenches.

"They're going against, you know, one of the best three or four offensive line groups they'll against all season each and every day," continued. "So iron sharpens iron, and we're getting better by who we go against."

"I'm pleased with where we are, we have to get better. And we have players on our defensive line that can get better. The worst feeling as a coach is when you don't have players that you can get better. There are coaches all across the country right now, across the defensive line, that don't have one 300-pounder, we've got several, we just got to continue to get them better and execute at a higher level."
