Georgia Has a Top-5 Quarterback Situation, According to ESPN

According to Adam Rittenberg of ESPN, Georgia fans need not worry about the competition to replace Stetson Bennett as he ranks the Georgia quarterback situation inside the top-5 in 2023.

Anytime a multi-year starter at quarterback departs from a program, the ensuing quarterback battle naturally becomes headline news for an entire offseason. When the departing quarterback happens to be the most accomplished quarterback in program history who also just engineered consecutive National Championship runs - as is the position the Georgia Football program finds itself in having to replace 2022 Heisman Trophy finalist Stetson Bennett - the attention and sense of urgency around the offseason quarterback battle are magnified exponentially. While a quarterback battle generates a certain degree of intrigue and excitement as fans watch the competition unfold, it also spawns a measure of anxiety within the collective fanbase as the program’s faithful wrestle with the implications of the possibility that whoever emerges from the competition as the newly minted starting quarterback might not perform at the level of his predecessor.

However, according to Adam Rittenberg of ESPN, Georgia fans need not worry about the competition to replace Stetson Bennett in 2023 as he ranks the Bulldogs’ quarterback situation as 4th best in the country for the upcoming college football season in his recent Future QB Power Rankings. While Rittenberg acknowledges that “Georgia will really miss Stetson Bennett,” he lauds the talents and prep rankings of Carson Beck and Brock Vandagriff - the two leading contenders to claim Georgia’s starting quarterback position.

A former four-star prospect, Beck is entering his fourth season in the Georgia program. Beck spent the 2022 season as the primary backup to Bennett and impressed in his limited playing time, completing 74.3% of his passes for 310 yards and four touchdowns. Vandagriff cannot match Beck’s experience, but he arrived at Georgia in 2021 with high expectations commensurate with his five-star prep ranking. While neither Beck nor Vandagriff has ever started a game at the college level, they were highly productive and successful prep quarterbacks, both having led their respective high school teams to state championships.

Rittenberg’s expectations for the Georgia quarterback situation entering the 2023 season may center on Beck and Vandagriff, but Sophomore Gunner Stockton is an immensely talented quarterback in his own right. The former Rabun County star earned rave reviews from teammates and coaches alike for his work on Georgia’s scout team last fall and will be looking to make his own run at Georgia’s starting quarterback position this offseason.

Replacing a quarterback as productive and accomplished as Stetson Bennett is a difficult proposition, but if Rittenberg’s quarterback power rankings hold true, no matter who emerges as Georgia’s starting quarterback for the 2023 season, the Bulldogs will be in very good hands.
