Despite two important wins, Jayhawks stuck at #3 the Top 25 Polls
Despite two important wins in the nation's best conference, the Kansas Jayhawks were unable to move up in the latest AP Poll, holding steady at #3 while barely moving up to the same spot in the Coaches Poll. The Houston Cougars, who rose to the top spot last week, gained one more first-place vote to get 49 total, increasing their lead over the Alabama Crimson Tide despite losing 3 points overall. The Jayhawks picked up one more first place vote to land at 8, cutting the gap between numbers 2 and 3. UCLA and Purdue rounded out the top 5, with Purdue holding onto their spot even with a home loss to Indiana on Saturday.
Virginia took two big losses to unranked teams this week, tumbling 7 spots all the way down to 13th. Gonzaga was the beneficiary, moving into the top 10 behind Marquette, Baylor, Arizona and Texas. Kansas State moved into the 11th spot, jumping over a Tennessee team that lost to Texas A&M in College Station.
The Big 12 had a total of five teams in the rankings, with Kansas at 3, Baylor at 7, Texas at 9, Kansas State at 11 and the TCU Horned Frogs at 22nd. Iowa State fell out of the poll after two losses this week, although they are still receiving votes in the poll. West Virginia was the only other Big 12 team to garner any votes.
It's the final week of the regular season for most conferences, but it takes a little while for games between two ranked teams to get started. The first comes on Wednesday, as #19 Xavier travels to take on #20 Providence before Texas heads to Fort Worth to take on TCU. And then we have to wait for Saturday, which has four matchups. First, Alabama travels to College Station to take on #24 Texas A&M. Then Kansas heads to Texas with the regular season Big 12 title likely on the line. After that one finishes, #25 Pittsburgh will tip against #16 Miami before Arizona and UCLA finish up the slate in the late game.
