Texas Longhorns at Kansas Jayhawks at Predictions

It's a must win game for the Jayhawks in Allen Fieldhouse tonight, so the crew gets together to tell you if the Big 12 hopes stay alive for the Jayhawks..

In this story:

It was a very ugly loss for the Kansas Jayhawks, as they couldn't get anything going against the Iowa State Cyclones and fell convincingly on the road. But they get an immediate chance to bounce back with a shot at home against the Big 12-leading Texas Longhorns.

Texas has gone on a tear in conference play since a loss on the road to Iowa State, and even a convincing loss to Tennessee wasn't enough to derail them. But playing in Allen Fieldhouse is a different animal, especially on Big Monday. Can Kansas bounce back and defend home court, or will Texas pretty much put the conference race on ice? Our crew shares their thoughts below.

It goes without saying, but this is a must-have game if KU wants a shot at winning the Big 12 this year. Conveniently, it’s a home Big Monday tilt, which genuinely bodes well for the Jayhawks: they’re 46-1 all time at home on Big Monday and 35-0 in the Bill Self era. That’s patently ridiculous. I feel like a broken record saying this in another preview, but it’s obvious that Kansas needs someone, anyone, else to step up and help Jalen Wilson on the offensive end of the floor. It doesn’t matter who, but it can’t be a one-man offensive show. Some better defensive energy/intensity than Saturday’s game would be nice, too, to avoid another big hole early. I’ll take the Jayhawks in a tight one because who am I to bet against history?

The Kansas Jayhawks got everything from Jalen Wilson and practically no support from anyone else in the loss to Iowa State. This team has no doubt had its highs and lows and the game against the Cyclones was low. There is no time to dwell on the loss as the Jayhawks return home to take on the No. 1 team in the Big 12, the Texas Longhorns. If the Jayhawks want any chance at winning the Big 12 conference like Brendan said they will have to get this victory. I am in no question biased, but Jalen Wilson is the player of the year, but even he needs other players to step up and help if Kansas wants any chance at winning against a stout Texas squad. The Jayhawks will have to score points and win the rebound stat line.

I’m not betting against KU at Allen Fieldhouse on Big Monday, but I can’t say I feel really confident choosing the Hawks. Like the guys above me said, someone, anyone not named Jalen Wilson has to step up tonight for Kansas to have a chance. I think that someone will be Kevin McCullar. Tonight is the night that he has his best game as a Jayhawk, and through sheer (J)will and determination, Kansas stays in the title race with a tight win.

The Jayhawks have had a ton of issues with consistency this year in performances, as early momentum seems to go a long way to affecting what the Jayhawks are able to do later in the game. Add in a bunch of injury issues, and there is definitely some concern about their ability to stick with a super talented and peaking Texas team.

I think the Jayhawks are better than the Kansas State team that lost a narrow game to the Longhorns on Saturday, but I also think that the matchup was better for them. If Kansas can get some inside production, then I'll feel pretty good. But either Dajuan Harris or McCullar will need to have a big night. I'm not sure they will.

Do I like predicting against the Jayhawks, especially when they are at home? No, not really. But I have also noticed that they seem to play better when I'm less confident in their abilities. Am I delusional enough to think that my prediction has a real effect on how they play? No. But I'm going to pretend like it does anyway, just in case.
