Miami Basketball Locks in its Future Behind Jai Lucas with New Contract Extension

After the biggest turnaround in NCAA history, it was only right that the Miami Hurricanes would lock down their future with a budding superstar head coach.

Even without an Athletic Director, the University of Miami already extended football head coach Mario Cristobal weeks prior, and now another extension has been earned by men's basketball head coach Jai Lucas.

Following an NCAA Tournament berth, reaching the round of 32 with a 26-9 record in his first season, and finishing third in the ACC after finishing dead last the year prior, Lucas sparked life back into a once-living-and-breathing program.

The year before, it was the worst season in program history. 7-24, a legendary head coach retired; no roster, with no hope in sight until Lucas took the job.

Moreover, his recruiting and talent acquisition in the transfer portal highlight that he is one of the future figureheads in college basketball, even after a short period. His retention of star players like Shelton Henderson and Dante Allen as building blocks for the program also adds to the case.

This is a five-year extension, per reports, increasing his buyout, as other fans desperately want the star coach as their leading man.

Furthermore, with the talent on the roster now and the possibility of returning a 20-point scorer, Malik Reneau, for his fifth season, the Canes are headed in the right direction as one of the top programs in the country during the preseason.

Lucas' work and extension also stem from his ability to make the Hurricanes more competitive, taking on challenges from other conferences like the SEC and Big Ten. He wants to be at the level he is accustomed to from when he was coaching at Duke and Kentucky.

Now the Hurricanes have one of the best rosters, coaches, and schedules in the country. It looks like a promising season ahead and an electric long-term future with Miami's new star coach calling the shots.
