Blake Corum Throws Out First Pitch For Detroit Tigers

Former Michigan RB Blake Corum stopped by Comerica Park to throw out the first pitch for the Detroit Tigers earlier today.

At Michigan, Blake Corum was known more for his toughness than his blazing speed, but there was nothing off-speed about the U-M legend as he threw out the first pitch for the Detroit Tigers on Sunday afternoon.

With part of Detroit’s fairly iconic skyline in the background, Corum whipped a strike across home plate to kick off the Tigers’ matchup with the visiting Oakland Athletics. And after embracing the crowd, Corum took some time to relish in the moment and evaluated his first pitch performance with Bally Sports Detroit,

“It was great,” Corum said. “I look back at it, I just wanted to get it down the pipe. But looking back, I wish I would have thrown a little more heat. I had a little more in my arsenal, like throwing a curveball, but I just threw my two-seam fastball and it went right down the pipe.”

As Corum said, the Michigan legend kept his pitching repertoire simple yet effective, which is a recipe he dialed into perfection during his time in Ann Arbor.

”These are just two Big Ten rings,” Corum said, gesturing to his hand, “and we have four more coming in on the 20th for the Spring Game, so I’m excited to see those.”

After winning a National Championship and setting the Michigan career rushing touchdown record in the process, Corum has achieved immense heights over the past several months. And with the 2024 NFL Draft taking place in Detroit later this month, Corum’s fairytale-esque story soon will add another chapter.

”I just try to take it one day at a time, but it's been nothing but great, just living out your childhood dreams,” Corum said. “Obviously going to the combine, training for the combine and training for pro day and ultimately getting ready for rookie mini camp, so it’s been nothing but great. It’s definitely been a lot, but I wouldn’t want it any other way.”

Corum will be one of many, many Wolverines selected in the NFL Draft, so it will be a celebratory day for Michigan on a large scale. But even with such a large transfer of talent from Ann Arbor to the pros, Corum has his eye on a few U-M players to watch during the 2024 season, guys that might overperform current expectations.

”There’s definitely some young guys I’m excited about, some transfers like Jaishawn [Barham], he went to my high school and transferred from Maryland. He’s a big backer, I’m excited to see what he does. I keep saying it, Donovan [Edwards] is going to do his thing, Kalel [Mullings] is going to do his thing, but Ben Hall. Ben Hall is a name to look out from, super excited to see what he does. He reminds me a lot of myself, just his work ethic, his determination to be great, but overall I’m really excited about the team.”

Overall, Corum expressed a lot of gratitude while in Detroit for the first pitch ceremony.

“Those long days, those long nights— we’re here,” Corum said. “So, it’s been nothing but great.”
