Missouri Baseball wanted their first home win of the year bad. They wanted it bad enough to put up 14 runs in the first inning and slam the door shut on any possibility of a comeback with another nine in the sixth inning.

Missouri gets their first run-rule of the season in their 28-10 win over Northern Kentucky University to earn their first home win. This is the first time Missouri has scored more than 20 runs in a game since their 21-6 win over Southeast Missouri in 2019. The last time they had a score this high was in 2008 when they won 31-12 against Texas.

There was a bit of deja vu to start the game. Like the first game of the series, most of the runs in the game were put up in the first inning. This time it was the Tigers.

Missouri’s let two norse on in the top of the first via a walk and a catcher’s interference in both game one and two of the series. Missouri’s senior right-hander Carter Rustad was able to pitch through it and keep Northern Kentucky without a hit for a different outcome than game one.

The Tigers bats helped achieve a different outcome, as well. By the first inning, they had more runs than their last four games combined with eight hits and home runs from the Jacksons Lovich and Beaman. They almost made it through the lineup twice and seven of the Tigers got a hit in their 14-run first inning. The 14 runs was most scored in one inning since 2005.

Northern Kentucky’s starter Clay Brock struggled in his first inning on the mound and Missouri took advantage of it. Missouri put up five hits, walked twice and were hit-by-pitch twice to reignite their bats after an offensive drought.

The Norse had to go to their bullpen twice in the first inning alone. Their second pitcher, sophomore right-hander Jared Teke gave up three more hits and five more runs in the first to add to Missouri’s lofty lead before he was replaced.

The Tigers brought out Daniel Wissler from the bullpen to take on the fifth inning. Unfortunately for the Tigers, the Norse countered with four pinch-hitters who were able to take advantage of Wissler. Northern Kentucky put up three runs on three hits in the fifth inning.

Right-hander junior Xavier Lovett then took the mound for the Tigers and followed up Wissler’s performance by allowing three more runs to score, walking in two. Freshman right-hander Charlie Miller was next up to pitch from the bullpen. He gave up a single to left to allow two more to score.

Missouri countered with nine runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth to reinstate the run-rule. Four Tigers put up multi-hit games in the offensive onslaught. Beaman put up seven RBIs in the game, Justin Colon put up five, Jedier Hernandez and Lovich put up four and Austin put up three. Missouri out-hit Northern Kentucky 16-7 and were hit-by-pitches seven times. The only inning they did not score a run in was the fifth.

Missouri improves their record to 5-5 on the season and drops 3-7. The Tigers will look to get the series win against the Norse on Sunday, March 2 at 1 p.m. CT.

  • A walk of Drew Culbertson brings in Kaden Peer. 5-0 Tigers
  •  Jedier Hernandez singled to left to bring Justin Colon home. 4-0 Tigers
  • A walk of Kaden Peer loaded the bases once more and Jackson Beaman was hit by a pitch to bring another run in. 3-0 Tigers
  • Tucker Moore runs and Trevor Austin dives into home after a single from Justin Colon to give the Tigers the lead in the bottom of the first. 2-0 Tigers
  • Tucker Moore got a lead-off single to start the offense for the Tigers. Trevor Austin was then hit by a pitch and Jackson Lovich singled to load the bases in the bottom of the first.
  • This game started exactly like the yesterdays. The first two Norse get on from a walk and catcher's interference.
