RALEIGH — Legends of the past filled the club level of the Lenovo Center to help usher in a new era for NC State men's basketball. Dereck Whittenburg, Chris Corchiani, and T.J. Warren were among the ex-Wolfpack players in the crowded room, all there to welcome new head coach Justin Gainey.

After a tumultuous six days, the Wolfpack collective caught its breath when Gainey walked in, flanked by athletic director Boo Corrigan and university chancellor Kevin Howell, all while the band played the fight song loudly. Rather than remaining bitter about the past, NC State appeared ready to embrace a new beginning with Gainey. As for the coach himself, it's a dream come true.

A true homecoming

Gainey, who grew up in High Point, N.C., knows NC State better than most. As a four-year player with the program under Herb Sendek, there's an understanding of what it means to be a part of the Wolfpack within Gainey. That ended up playing a critical part in Corrigan's decision to hire him, as the lack of feel from the Will Wade era ended up being its downfall in the Triangle.

"As a former captain, he knows what it takes to be a strong leader and what we need to do to take the next step," Corrigan said. "As a two-time NC State graduate, he understands the love that we all have for this university. To quote (head football coach Dave Doeren), Justin's blood is in the bricks. We're excited for the program and where you can go."

When he took the podium, Gainey's excitement was palpable in the room. His path back to NC State was long and required tremendous dedication to his craft, but he finally made it back into the Wolfpack. With former teammates, friends and family in the room, the gratitude flowed through a long-lost member of the Pack now back in its clutches.

"This is a surreal moment for me. It's like a dream come true that still hasn't fully set in," Gainey said. "I'm just so excited to be here, to be in front of you. It's home. I'm excited to be back home."

Finding someone with an understanding of what NC State is, not just as a place, but as an organism with so many moving parts and a culture, was critical during Corrigan's search. Gainey didn't waste time in establishing his understanding of what it meant to be a part of the Wolfpack in the past and how he'll respect the opportunity he has now, rather than viewing it as just another stop on a longer road.

"This is a special place with proud tradition and I don't take any of this lightly," Gainey said. "I don't take any of these responsibilities lightly. I know what comes with it. I was born here in North Carolina. I played here at NC State. I understand what being on tobacco world is all about... You've got to have a certain type of toughness to be here."

Toughness will be the foundation

Gainey used the word toughness when describing the culture he wanted to bring to the program several different times. Given his background as a defensive coach, that shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. However, it's also representative of what NC State wants to be about. The Wolfpack has a nature of surprising people, while also being the Tobacco Road program capable of screwing everything up for everyone else. Gainey wants the Wolfpack to be a menace.

"The thing I want to promise you is that you're going to get my best effort every single day in every single thing that we do," Gainey said. "We're going to be relentless and my teams will reflect that relentless mindset."

The new head coach talked about his identity as a player being built around that relentlessness and toughness. He explained that nothing will be given in his program and his players will be high-character, but highly competitive members of a team, rather than playing for themselves.

"As I think about the main characteristic of NC State, we're tough," Gainey said. "Think about Whittenburg and that team that won the championship. They had to come from the play-in game and win the ACC Championship to even get into the tournament. Tough."
