Newark, NJ - It hasn’t taken long to realize that Hannah Hidalgo is good. Really good. Just six days after scoring the most points (31) in a career debut for a Notre Dame women’s basketball player, the freshman point guard notched another record in Sunday’s 104-57 win over NJIT. Hidalgo notched her first career double-double with 26 points and a school-record tying 12 steals in the New Jersey native’s first game in her home state.

The Irish (1-1) looked sluggish early in their first game since last Monday’s loss to No. 6 South Carolina in Paris, France. A feisty Highlander squad (2-1) hung with the No. 10 Irish throughout the game’s first quarter. Hidalgo’s fifth steal of the first quarter led to an uncontested layup to give her 11 points at the end of the game’s first 10 minutes to put Notre Dame up 24-17.

The Fighting Irish slowly came to life against a far less talented but hard-playing NJIT team, which is led by 1993 Notre Dame alum Mike Lane. Sonia Citron capped her first half scoring with her only 3-pointer of the afternoon to have 18 points by halftime. The junior All-American candidate finished with 26 points on 10 for 11 shooting from the field and going 5 of 6 at the free throw line.

NJIT’s Alejandra Zuniga scored a team-high points in the loss. She scored 11 in the first half but didn’t score again until early in the fourth quarter after Notre Dame’s defense, which forced 27 turnovers, put the clamps on the point guard.

Maddy Westbeld stuffed her stat line with 14 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and four steals. Her five assists were second to Hidalgo’s game-high six. Kylee Watson finished with 12 points and Fordham graduate transfer Anna DeWolfe had 10 for their first double digit games of the season.

The Irish played the game in New Jersey to play near the hometowns of Watson, Olivia Miles and Hidalgo, who are all from the state. Citron and Nat Marshall are both from neighboring New York as well.
