What to Know - Notre Dame: The Fighting Irish are coming out of the first of two bye weeks looking to build on the momentum of their 48-20 win over Southern Cal two weeks ago. The Irish averaged 46.0 points per game through their first four games of the season, but they have averaged just 25.7 points over their last four games against four ranked teams. The Irish are the only team in the nation that will face four consecutive ranked teams this season (based on current rankings). Notre Dame’s defense comes in ranked No. 14 in scoring (16.3), No. 4 in team passing efficiency, No. 3 in pass yards allowed (153.1), and No. 12 in total defense (283.0). The Fighting Irish hold a 50-21-1 all-time advantage in their previous 72 games against Pittsburgh.
What to Know – Pittsburgh: For the second year in a row, the story should have been the return of Phil Jurkovec to Notre Dame Stadium. The sixth-year quarterback spent his first two seasons at Notre Dame as a back-up and then started for three years at Boston College. Injury kept him from facing the Irish at BC last year and after transferring to Pitt this season, he was benched in favor of Christian Veilleux after five games and was listed as the No. 3 quarterback this week. Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi confirmed late this week that Jurkovec has practiced with the punt and kickoff return teams and even at tight end to have a chance to play against his old team. Two other former Irish players, running back C’Bo Flemister and linebacker Shayne Simon, are both in line to play as well. Pitt has the No. 95 pass efficiency offense and the No. 112 rushing offense in the nation. Their defensive pass efficiency ranks No. 94.
