It was once considered that former Notre Dame star tight end Michael Mayer was the top tight end in the 2023 NFL Draft, but that has changed lately according to many NFL Draft analysts. The latest Mock Draft from ESPN Draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. has Mayer falling to the bottom of the first round, with Mayer going No. 26 overall to the Dallas Cowboys.

"Dalton Schultz left in free agency and the Cowboys never replaced him. Let's get Dak Prescott a talented safety valve here. Mayer is the best all-around tight end in this class; he's not afraid to latch on to defenders and block. Don't discount his receiving upside, either. He had 180 catches for 2,099 yards and 18 scores in three college seasons. He can be an outlet on crossers and hooks and he'll pick up first downs after the catch. Dallas also has scouted the class' best wide receivers, so keep an eye out if one of the top guys drops." - Mel Kiper Jr.

Kiper released a mock draft back in January and had Mayer going No. 15 overall to the Green Bay Packers, and he had former Notre Dame standout defensive end Isaiah Foskey going in the first round (No. 29 overall to the Denver Broncos). Kiper also had Mayer going No. 15 overall in his mock draft that was released in March, which was after the NFL Scouting Combine.

In his latest mock draft, Kiper dropped Mayer all the way down to No. 26, and he no longer has Mayer as the top tight end in the draft. Kiper still has the Packers taking a tight end at No. 15, but he now has Utah's Dalton Kincaid being selected in the No. 15 spot.

Kiper no longer has Foskey in the first or second round.

The fall of Mayer is puzzling to say the least. What could possibly have changed in less than a month, with no workouts or football being played. It would seem that Mayer's game continues to be over-analyzed, while Kincaid - who didn't test this offseason - is still in the "ascending" phase of analysis.

We'll see how things shake out in the NFL Draft, but in my view Mayer has the best film and best skill at tight end in the 2023 NFL Draft.
