Michael Mayer To The Green Bay Packers In Latest ESPN Mock Draft

In this story:
Former Notre Dame star tight end Michael Mayer had a brilliant career with the Fighting Irish and a strong showing at the NFL Scouting Combine. That has Mayer as almost a sure bet to be a first round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. ESPN's Todd McShay released his post-combine mock draft and he has Mayer going right in the middle of round one.
McShay made his prediction after the big trade between the Carolina Panthers and Chicago Bears. In that mock draft he has Mayer going No. 15 overall to the Green Bay Packers.
"I fit Mayer with Green Bay in my last mock, too. Let's improve this offensive supporting cast. Christian Watson looked awesome last season, but Allen Lazard and Robert Tonyan are free agents. It doesn't matter if it's Aaron Rodgers, Jordan Love or me throwing the ball, this has to be a focus this offseason. Perhaps GM Brian Gutekunst becomes enamored with a receiver like USC's Jordan Addison or Ohio State's Jaxon Smith-Njigba, but I'm leaning toward Mayer, a 6-5 tight end with a wide catch radius and some physical traits after the catch. He came down with 67 catches for 809 yards and nine TDs last season, and he can be a serious matchup problem for opponents in the red zone." - Todd McShay, ESPN
Should Mayer be picked by the Packers he'll be a much-needed security blanket for either future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers or young quarterback Jordan Love, should Rodgers retire or head to another team. Green Bay is certainly is need of more impact pass catchers.
Mayer finished his Notre Dame career as the program's all-time best pass catcher for a tight end, hauling in 180 passes for 2,099 yards and 18 touchdowns. Mayer also set program best marks for catches (71) and yards (840) as a sophomore in 2021, and he set the touchdown mark (10) in 2022.
