Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman updated the injury situation for the Fighting Irish, and the Irish will be without a key defensive lineman for at least two weeks.

Freeman stated in his Monday Press Conference that junior defensive tackle Gabriel Rubio will be out for at least the next two weeks after suffering a minor knee injury in the 42-3 win over Navy.

Rubio had a strong performance in the win over Navy, and he's one of the more experienced players in the middle of the defensive line. The Missouri native was listed previously behind nose guard Howard Cross III, but he would play both inside positions. Rubio is an important part of the interior rotation this season, and he was a key reserve last season. He was disruptive throughout fall camp and he carried that into the win over Navy.

With Rubio out the Irish will likely have Jason Onye take that dual position role as the next man in at defensive tackle. Onye got his first career action on Saturday as well, and the talented junior registered a pair of tackles. He performed well in his first career game as part of the rotation.

I would expect sophomore Donovan Hinish to also get a chance to get more action against Tennessee State and possibly NC State. Hinish had a strong spring and an even better fall camp, which is why he is now in position to get more reps with Rubio out.

Senior Rylie Mills and Cross remain the starters for the Irish heading into the week one matchup against Tennessee State.

Freeman noted that Rubio's knee injury is the only new injury coming out of the win over Navy.
