Notre Dame 2023 Post-Spring Depth Chart - Offense Edition
Notre Dame is wrapping up its spring semester and the summer is right around the corner. With spring practice behind them it's time to take a look at the post-spring offseason depth chart. We'll begin with the Notre Dame offense.
QUARTERBACK
With Sam Hartman now the clear number one quarterback the battle now falls to who is the backup. Sophomore Steve Angeli heads into the summer in position to win the job, but he'll battle true freshman Kenny Minchey, who will look to build on his first spring on the team.
Notre Dame will be a player short at quarterback from a numbers standpoint, so good health will be the key.
RUNNING BACK
Junior Audric Estime is now the clear top back for the Irish, and he'll look to build on his breakout 2022 campaign. Behind him is a lot of talent, and a lot of question marks. Sophomore Gi'Bran Payne was the only healthy back behind Estime this spring and he took full advantage of the opportunity. He heads into the summer with a chance to earn legitimate carries for the Irish in the fall.
Fellow sophomore Jadarian Price is immensely talented, but he is coming back from a challenging Achilles injury. If he gets back to good health he and Payne will give the Irish a very, very talented one-two punch behind Estime. Notre Dame will also welcome gifted freshman Jeremiyah Love to the roster this summer, and the departure of Logan Diggs opens up a tremendous opportunity for him.
WIDE RECEIVER
Notre Dame now calls its receivers by different names, which you'll see below. You can also expect to see the receivers moving around a bit more than we did in the past.
Sophomore Tobias Merriweather had an outstanding spring and he's not only entrenched as the to wideout at the Z alignment, he's also battling to become the top overall target in the pass game.
Sixth-year senior Matt Salerno will be a key contributor at wide receiver and he can play both the Z and F positions. Freshman Rico Flores Jr. had an outstanding first semester on campus and put himself in position to earn real snaps in his first season.
The F position is the name for Notre Dame's slot position, and junior Jayden Thomas returns as the starter at that position. As we saw in the Blue-Gold Game, Thomas can move around and play the outside spots as well. That is only possible due to the emergence of converted running back Chris Tyree and standout freshman Jaden Greathouse, who are both coming off strong springs.
Notre Dame's depth at both the Z and F positions certainly played a role in the decision of Lorenzo Styles to transfer.
Junior Deion Colzie had a quality spring and is in position to battle for a starting job in the fall. He has the size/speed combination to dominate that position, but he needs to take his game to yet another level. Freshman Braylon James will battle for the number two spot, but there other wideouts (Merriweather, Thomas, Greathouse, Flores) that can also push for time in the boundary.
TIGHT END
Junior Mitchell Evans did enough last season and in the spring to go into the season as the clear number one player. Sophomore Holden Staes also had a big spring and he's poised to form a potent one-two combination with Evans. They complement each other quite nicely from a skillset standpoint.
Junior Davis Sherwood is listed as a tight end and he can play the position, but he also serves as the primary fullback when Notre Dame wants to get a lead blocker in the backfield.
Injuries are a concern behind this trio. Rising sophomore Eli Raridon is incredibly gifted but he has suffered two ACL injuries in less than a year. Senior Kevin Bauman has also battled injuries throughout his career. Freshman Cooper Flanagan should also be able to help in year one.
OFFENSIVE LINE
All-American junior Joe Alt is the clear top blocker for Notre Dame heading into 2023. Veteran Tosh Baker has established himself as a top reserve, and as the Irish coaches stated in the spring, he could provide depth at multiple positions. Elite freshman Charles Jagusah will likely start his career at tackle, but as we've discussed in the past he's a versatile player who could push his way onto the field at both tackles spots or guard.
Sophomore Billy Schrauth has never played a snap in his brief Notre Dame career, but he established himself as the team's best guard during the spring. Classmate Ashton Craig also had an outstanding spring and could play at both guard or center. Veteran Michael Carmody has played tackle, guard and center during his career and could do so moving forward. Carmody's issue is not being able to put on weight and not being able to stay healthy.
Veteran Zeke Correll emerged as a steady player for the Irish at center last season and now he's a team leader. Junior Pat Coogan played both guard and center this spring, but he's better suited for guard, where he presents a veteran presence. As stated above, Craig could also play the position.
Veteran Andrew Kristofic leaves spring on top of the depth chart and he has experience, having started eight games in his career (all at left guard). Rising junior Rocco Spindler emerged late in the spring and went from afterthought over the winter to a legitimate contender for the starting role heading into the summer.
Junior Blake Fisher is the unquestioned starter at right tackle and he's poised for a breakout season. Sophomore Aamil Wagner was a pleasant surprise for Notre Dame this spring and he is part of the future at offensive tackle. Incoming freshmen Sullivan Absher and Christopher Terek will likely being their career at tackle but both can play guard.
