Defensive Lineman Alexander Ehrensberger To Retire, Pursue Medical School

In this story:
Senior defensive lineman Alexander Ehrensberger announced his plans to retire from football so he can pursue opportunities in medical school. Ehrensberger is graduating from Notre Dame this semester and will embark on his new career path in his native Germany.
Ehrensberger signed with Notre Dame as part of the 2020 class. He played high school football in Germany and came to the Fighting Irish program as a very raw, but very toolsy player.
He saw his first action as a freshman in Notre Dame's 52-0 win over South Florida. Ehrensberger had two tackles for loss and a sack in that game. He earned a spot in the Irish rotation in 2021, and he made a key play in Notre Dame's loss to Cincinnati. With the Irish trailing 17-0, Ehrensberger came off the edge and forced Bearcat quarterback Desmond Ridder to pump a throw and move around, which allowed Isaiah Foskey time to come around the other end to get a sack and knock the ball loose. Drew White recovered the fumble and took it back 28 yards, setting up the Notre Dame offense for a score.
Ehrensberger didn't play as much this past season but by all accounts he was a very well regarded member of the Fighting Irish program. He spent time at both defensive end and defensive tackle this spring, providing the defense with a versatile big man up front.
With Ehrensberger not returning for the 2023 season the Irish are down to 81 scholarships. Notre Dame still has 17 defensive lineman on scholarship, with nine projecting outside and eight projecting inside, so the Irish are still in a very strong numbers situation up front.
