Notre Dame Bowl Projections Get A Shake Up
Notre Dame (8-3) got back to its winning ways this weekend with a dominant 45-7 victory over Wake Forest. That victory not only shot Notre Dame up the rankings, it also got some momentum back.
It was an interesting weekend for the rest of college football as well, and Notre Dame's bowl projections got shook up a bit after the weekend's results.
Notre Dame is still primarily being projected to the ReliaQuest Bowl, which was previously known as the Outback Bowl. What has changed, however, is the opponent has changed with some.
Mark Schlabach of ESPN, Athlon Sports and 247Sports all still project Notre Dame to face LSU in the ReliaQuest Bowl. CollegeFootballNews.com and Sporting News have Notre Dame in the ReliaQuest Bowl but neither has Notre Dame playing the Tigers.
CFB News has Notre Dame slated to play Maryland, which would make an interesting matchup against a Big Ten school. It seems more likely that Notre Dame will face a SEC team in the ReliaQuest Bowl, and this particular projection was an outlier in that regard. Notre Dame has only face Maryland twice and has won both games (2002, 2011).
Bill Bender at Sporting News has the Irish projected to take on Ole Miss in the ReliaQuest Bowl. Notre Dame and Ole Miss have never played in a bowl game, and the two schools have met just twice. Ole Miss beat the Irish back in 1977 while Notre Dame beat Ole Miss 37-14 in 1985.
Kyle Bonagura of ESPN and Jerry Palm at CBS Sports both have Notre Dame projected to play Oklahoma State in the Pop Tarts Bowl, which was previously known as the Camping World Bowl and the Champs Sports Bowl. Notre Dame and Oklahoma State played in the Fiesta Bowl after the 2021 season, a game the Cowboys won.
The biggest outlier is the College Football Network, which has Notre Dame projected to play Oregon State in the Holiday Bowl.
