Notre Dame (6-2) moved up in this week’s US LBM AFCA Coaches Poll. The Fighting Irish were idle this weekend but still moved up four spots to No. 14 this week after a handful of teams in front of them lost.

North Carolina took the biggest fall of the week, dropping seven sports from No. 10 to 17 after a 31-27 home upset loss to Virginia for its first loss of the season. Two Irish opponents fell from in front of to behind the Irish as well. Duke lost 38-30 to Florida State to slip from No. 17 to 21 and Southern Cal took a five-spot tumble from No. 16 to 21 after falling 34-32 to Utah to lose their second consecutive game.

The top five teams remained unchanged from last week. Georgia (7-0) stays at No. 1 after a bye this week. The Bulldogs garnered 58 first-place votes while Michigan stayed No. 2 following a 49-0 thrashing of rival Michigan State. The Wolverines garnered four first-place votes. Ohio State beat Penn State 20-12 to stay at No. 3 and Florida State used a big second half to beat Duke. Washington stays No. 5 after a narrow 15-7 win over Arizona State.

Penn State fell from No. 6 to 10 after its loss to Ohio State. The Nittany Lions’ loss allowed Oklahoma and Texas to each move up a spot to No. 6 and 7, respectively. Alabama and Oregon fill-out the top 10 at 8 and 9, respectively.

The only other Fighting Irish opponent in the poll is No. 18 Louisville, which took advantage of losses by Tennessee, Duke and USC to move up three spots while being idle this week.

Iowa fell out of this week’s poll after losing 12-10 to Minnesota. The Hawkeyes are the only team to fall out this week, while James Madison joins the poll at No. 25.
