Part of the fun of the spring is watching the latest version of the Notre Dame football team start to take shape, and a big part of that are the position battles that will take place. Notre Dame has a number of very intriguing - and very important - position battles set to rage this spring.

In our latest show we discussed those battles, who we expect to start, who could have the biggest impact by seizing a job, and how the battles will impact the offense.

The show begins with a discussion about the quarterback position, and whether or not there's a true battle between transfer Sam Hartman and returner Tyler Buchner. We discuss why it makes sense that Hartman will be the guy, how Buchner should not be discounted, and ultimately how learning from Hartman for a year could be good for Buchner.

Next we discuss how there really isn't a position battle at running back. Juniors Audric Estime and Logan Diggs will both be feature, and who starts really doesn't matter.

The wide receiver battles took up a lot of the discussion .We discussed the boundary battle between Virginia Tech transfer Kaleb Smith and talented rising junior Deion Colzie. Both will play, but who wins the job will be telling about how good this tandem, and the wide receiver position, will be.

Next we move over to the boundary and slot positions, and discuss how three players - Tobias Merriweather, Jayden Thomas and Lorenzo Styles - are pushing for two positions, and how things will look from a rotation standpoint if all three play well this spring.

We also spent some time talking about how the talented early enrollee receivers (Braylon James, Jaden Greathouse, Rico Flores) could be hard to keep off the field.

Next we move onto the guard position, where Notre Dame has two open spots heading into the spring. There are plenty of bodies at the position, but also a lot of questions. We discuss veterans Michael Carmody and Andrew Kristofic, talented sophomore Billy Schrauth, former top ranked recruit Rocco Spindler and another sophomore, Ty Chan.

Following that breakdown we had a mailbag, where Irish Breakdown fans and subscribers asked us questions.
