Notre Dame Football Practice Report - August 10

Notre Dame held another practice today and they are officially past the halfway point of fall camp. We had just five periods of availability today.

For the first time in camp (when we were there), the team started the practice with a tempo period. The first team offense went against the first team defense, which was different from what we saw in the past when the tempo periods were on air. A quick note, Chris Tyree wasn't there during tempo, but he came out right after and immediately jumped into drills and looked fine. Not sure why he was delayed getting out, but he was the first guy in drills, so I didn't see anything injury related. Also, all of the running backs were out there going through drills, they all seemed fine.

Here's the first team offense:

QB Sam Hartman
RB Audric Estime (Gi'Bran Payne came in at some point)
WR Tobias Merriweather
WR Jayden Thomas
WR Jaden Greathouse
TE Mitchell Evans
LT Joe Alt
LG Pat Coogan
C Zeke Correll
RG Rocco Spindler
RT Blake Fisher

Here's the defense we saw:

DE NaNa Osafo-Mensah
DT Rylie Mills
NT Howard Cross III
DE Jordan Botelho
LB JD Bertrand
LB Marist Liufau (Jack Kiser replaced him at some point)
NB Thomas Harper
S Xavier Watts
S Ramon Henderson
CB Benjamin Morrison
CB Clarence Lewis

Here's the second team offense:

QB Steve Angeli
RB Jadarian Price (Devyn Ford came in at some point)
WR Deion Colzie
WR Rico Flores Jr.
WR Jordan Faison
TE Holden Staes
LT Tosh Baker
LG Billy Schrauth
C Ashton Craig
RG Andrew Kristofic
RT Aamil Wagner

Here's the second defense we saw:

DE Javontae Jean-Baptiste
DT Gabriel Rubio
NT Jason Onye
DE Josh Burnham
LB Drayk Bowen
LB Jaylen Sneed
NB Micah Bell
S DJ Brown
S Antonio Carter
CB Jaden Mickey
CB Christian Gray

Tempo - What We Saw:

Notre Dame got a solid gain on an inside run on the first play. On the second play, Notre Dame threw a quick perimeter screen to Jaden Greathouse, but Jordan Botelho quickly got outside and tackled him for a minimal gain. On the next rep, tight end Mitchell Evans beat Marist Liufau on a quick out cut, and Sam Hartman got the ball out quickly and accurately for a quality gain. Liufau was called for a personal foul after throwing Evans to the ground, and he was immediately replaced by Jack Kiser. Hartman hit Tobias Merriweather on a quick out on an RPO for a quick 5-yard gain. On the next rep he hit Gi'Bran Payne on a check down for a solid gain, which ended the session for the first team.

Overall the timing of throws was good, the offense moved with good tempo once they got lined up correctly. Freeman was upset with the group initially. They lined up in 11 personnel, but with Tyree not out there his replacement - Greathouse - didn't get out on time. Once they got settled they were sharp, Hartman got the ball out quick and they had a string of solid gains.

The twos were out next.

The offense ran a stretch play on the first play and initially there was a quality hole behind the right side of the line, but Jaylen Sneed made a very good read, scraped quickly from the backside and got to the back for a quick stop. It was a really impressive play by Sneed. Angeli hit Davis Sherwood on a slide route for a short gain on rep two, and rep three got was another outside run, but this one got blown up. Defensive tackle Gabriel Rubio whipped Ashton Craig and got into the backfield to blow up the play. Rubio continues to have an impressive fall camp as part of a really impactful interior line unit. Jordan Faison dropped an out cut on the final play of the tempo period. It was a really good ball from Angeli, who got the ball out quickly, floated it over top of the nickel and into Faison's hands.

There wasn't much to evaluate following the tempo period. They worked on special teams pursuit drills and tackling drills, and then broke into individual periods.

A couple of observations:

*** The quarterbacks looked to have benefitted a great deal from the day off yesterday. The balls were coming out with more zip during individual and the tempo period.

*** The offensive line played with a bit better cohesion today than what we saw in the previous practice, especially the first group. Rocco Spindler had an impressive performance during the tempo and got a good push in the run game.

*** Cam Hart wasn't at practice today, which was expected, but it doesn't sound like it was anything serious.

*** All of the running backs that were banged up on Tuesday night were out there today and looked fine. No limps, everyone taking reps.

*** Junior Tuihalamaka was back out there today.

*** Tight end Kevin Bauman and cornerback Chance Tucker remain out.
