According to a source close to the program, Notre Dame is slated to hire Alabama analyst and former Crimson Tide graduate assistant Max Bullough. Bullough will work with the linebackers, which makes him the replacement for James Laurinaitis, who held that position in 2022.

Bullough actually comes with more experience as a coach than did Laurinaitis. Bullough earned All-Big Ten honors in 2011 (2nd team), 2012 (1st team) and 2013 (1st team) as a linebacker at Michigan State. As a senior, Bullough was named a third-team All-American and earned National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors, and also earned Academic All-American honors during his career with the Spartans.

The Michigan native registered 299 career tackles, 31 career tackles for loss and eight career sacks for the Spartans. He then spent three seasons with the Houston Texans, where he played linebacker and special teams. Bullough made 56 tackles during his NFL career.

He began his coaching career in 2019 as a graduate assistant coach at Cincinnati, where he worked under then Bearcat defensive coordinator and current Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman.

Bullough then spent the next three seasons (2020-2022) as a defensive graduate assistant at Alabama, where he was part of the 2020 Crimson Tide squad that won a national championship. After spending the maximum of three years as a GA with Alabama, Bullough was expected to transition into an analyst role, but instead he'll now be coming to South Bend as a graduate assistant, which means he will have an on-field role.
