Notre Dame vs LSU In The Peach Bowl Projection From Lindy's
Lindy's Sports has a very intriguing bowl matchup in its College Football National 2023 Preview. Lindy's has Notre Dame set to square off against a very familiar face in a New Year's Six bowl game. In its postseason projections, Lindy's has Notre Dame set to face LSU in the Peach Bowl.
The intrigue for this matchup is obvious on many levels. Notre Dame and LSU have squared off twice in bowl games over the last decade, and both matchups came down to the wire. Notre Dame beat LSU 31-28 on a walk-off field goal to win the 2014 Music City Bowl. Three years later the Irish scored the game winning touchdown with less than a minute and a half remaining in the game to beat the Tigers 21-17 in the Camping World Bowl.
Of course, the more intriguing part of this matchup would be the Marcus Freeman vs. Brian Kelly angle.
Kelly was Notre Dame's head coach from 2010-21, and he was the man in charge for the Irish in both of those bowl victories over the Tigers. He left Notre Dame following the 2021 season to take over a LSU program that won a title just three seasons prior. Kelly went 111-40 in 12 seasons with Notre Dame. Kelly was just 5-6 in the postseason with the Irish, but two of those wins came over LSU.
Freeman was hired to be Notre Dame's defensive coordinator in Kelly's final season (2021), and he was chosen as the head coach replacement after Kelly departed. Kelly went 10-4 in his first season with LSU while Freeman went 9-4 with the Irish. Both teams had huge top five wins last season, with LSU beating No. 6 Alabama 32-31 the same weekend that Notre Dame dominated No. 4 Clemson by a 35-14 score.
Kelly went 2-2 in matchups against opponents that were ranked when they played, while Freeman 4-2 in such contests.
Should this end up being the postseason matchup for both teams it would certainly make for an entertaining lead up to the game.
Lindy's ranks LSU fifth in its preseason magazine while Notre Dame checks in 12th.
