What We Learned About Notre Dame This Spring

Notre Dame is heading into its final stretch of the 2023 spring practice period, with the Blue-Gold Game coming up on April 22nd. We'll all get a chance to see the Fighting Irish in that spring game, but Wednesday was our last open practice. We've seen most of what we'll see, and in our latest show we discuss everything that we saw and what we learned about Notre Dame this spring.

You can listen to that breakdown below:

NOTRE DAME OFFENSE

NOTRE DAME DEFENSE

Here is the video option for the show.

The show kicks off with an overview of the spring, and that is followed by a breakdown of the Notre Dame offense, and then the Irish defense.

Our offensive breakdown began with a thorough dive into the quarterback battle between Tyler Buchner and Sam Hartman. We discussed how much Buchner has grown over the last year and then where Hartman is in his transition into the Irish offense. That is followed by a breakdown of the Irish wideouts, including a discussion about the breakout performance from Tobias Merriweather, the potential of Deion Colzie, the transition of Chris Tyree from running back, and the talented freshman trio of Jaden Greathouse, Rico Flores Jr. and Braylon James.

The offensive line was the final area we covered on offense, with a focus on the guard battle and the emergence of Billy Schrauth.

Next we break down the Notre Dame defense, beginning with the defensive line. We discuss the big picture view of the line and whether or not it has improved since last season. Specifically we discuss the spring performance of Rylie Mills, the breakout of Jason Onye and what transfer Javontae Jean-Baptiste has shown.

The linebackers were our next topic of conversation, with a focus on veterans JD Bertrand and Jack Kiser, the emergence of Nolan Ziegler and the potential role for talented sophomore Jaylen Sneed. We wrapped the spring breakdown portion of the show with a discussion on the secondary, including a breakdown of what we've seen from young corners Jaden Mickey and Chance Tucker.
