Notre Dame offensive tackles Joe Alt and Blake Fisher were both named to the Outland Trophy Watch List for the 2023 season. The juniors were two of the 91 players named to the list.

Alt earned Freshman All-American honors in 2021 and last season earned first team All-American honors from the Associated Press, Pro Football Focus, CBS Sports, ESPN, and second-team honors from Sporting News, Football Writers Association of America, AFCA, USA Today and The Athletic.

Fisher was the higher ranked player coming into Notre Dame, and he beat out Alt and several other players to earn the starting left tackle spot to kickoff the 2021 campaign. Fisher, then a true freshman, injured his knee in the first half of the season opener. He didn't return until the Fiesta Bowl, and by then Alt had established himself as the starting left tackle.

The duo is now expected to compete for the honor of the nation's best tackle tandem. Alt simply needs to build on his 2022 campaign to put himself in position to win this award. Fisher is now almost two full years removed from his knee injury and the hope for Notre Dame is that he can make a big jump, especially with him now having 15 starts under his belt.

The Outland Trophy goes annually to the best interior lineman in football, and it can be on either side of the ball. All offensive line positions are eligible for the award, as are defensive tackles.

Notre Dame has had three players win the Outland Trophy. Tackle George Connor won the first ever Outland Trophy back in 1946. Two years later the award was won by guard Bill Fischer. The last Notre Dame player to win the honor was Ross Browner back in 1976.

Michigan center Olusegun Oluwatimi won the Outland Trophy last season.
