The watch list honors continue to pile up for Notre Dame players with a pair of Fighting Irish standouts making the list for one of the biggest awards in college football. Quarterback Sam Hartman and left tackle Joe Alt were both named to the watch list for the Walter Camp Award.

The Walter Camp Award goes annually to the nation's most outstanding player, regardless of position.

Hartman enters the 2023 season as one of the most prolific passers in college football history. He currently ranks 18th all-time in passing yards (12,967) and 19th all-time in passing touchdowns (110). He ranks second in yards and first in touchdown passes on the all-time ACC lists.

Hartman chose to transfer from Wake Forest to Notre Dame for his final season, and his arrival has greatly raised expectations for the Irish this season.

Alt is considered one of the best players in college football, not just one of the top blockers. A consensus preseason first-team All-American by the various publications, Alt was also ranked as the No. 5 returning player in college football by Pro Football Focus.

The Minnesota native earned Freshman All-American honors in 2021 and last season earned first team All-American honors from the Associated Press, Pro Football Focus, CBS Sports, ESPN, and second-team honors from Sporting News, Football Writers Association of America, AFCA, USA Today and The Athletic.

The Walter Camp Award was first handed out in 1967, with former USC running back OJ Simpson winning the first two honors. Notre Dame has had four different players win the Walter Camp Award. Tight end Ken MacAfee was the first, winning it back in 1977. Heisman Trophy winner Tim Brown also won the Walter Camp Award in 1987. Wideout Raghib "Rocket" Ismail won the honor in 1990, and linebacker Manti Te'o won it in 2012.
