Notre Dame landed a commitment from Clearwater (Fla.) Academy International defensive tackle Sean Sevillano Jr. The Fighting Irish beat out Ohio State, Miami (Fla.) and Auburn to land the 6-2, 300-pound lineman. Landing Sevillano gives Notre Dame its fourth defensive line commitment in just over a month.

Let's take a look at what the commitment of Sevillano means for the Notre Dame 2024 recruiting class and the Fighting Irish depth chart.

NOTRE DAME CLASS IMPACT

Sevillano is the 17th player to commit to Notre Dame in the 2024 class. He is the ninth defensive player in the class and is the fourth defensive lineman. Sevillano is the only defensive tackle in the current class, and he joins a line group that includes ends Cole Mullins, Bryce Young and Loghan Thomas.

Notre Dame signed four defensive linemen in the 2023 class, but three of those players are defensive ends. Devan Houstan is the only true interior player, but one of the other three ends could also slide inside. Houstan could potentially play over the center, but he projects even better as a three-technique, at least at the present moment. None are pure nose tackles, and only one of the 2022 signees project as a nose. That made landing a nose in the 2024 class very important, and Sevillano gives the Irish that player.

Notre Dame also wants to add more beef to the interior of its defensive line. Only one of Notre Dame's current defensive linemen were 300 pounds when they signed with the Irish (Aidan Keanaaina). Sevillano is listed between 300 to 325 pounds, but no matter which is more accurate, he certainly adds some beef to the defense.

NOTRE DAME FIT

There is no doubt the position that Sevillano fits in the Notre Dame defense. Interior players for the Irish have to be able to do a little bit of everything, meaning playing over the center and over the guards, but the nose in the Irish defense is primarily an over the center player. Notre Dame wants and needs players that add more beef, and ideally a player that can not only two-gap, but can also penetrate.

Sevillano has the beef that Notre Dame wants and needs more of. He's on the shorter side and he doesn't seem to have great length, but his length is good enough for it not to be a liability. He's not just big, he's also incredibly strong. His weight room numbers are outstanding for such a young player, and he shows it on the field. His technique and hand play needs a lot of work, but he has the raw power and girth to eventually be a stout player up the middle of a college defense.

Notre Dame isn't bringing in Sevillano to be a heavy pass rusher, but his production as a junior shows he can be a playmaker. Sevillano shows a good vertical burst, and he closes well on the football, which helped fuel his monster numbers that included 40 tackles for loss and 19 sacks.

Sevillano shows good vertical burst off the line, which allows him to be disruptive up the middle. He tends to play very high, especially for a shorter player, so that's something he'll need to work on. He's able to bully high school players, but if he plays that high at the next level he'll have a tougher time holding the point. This is a technical issue that can be corrected, and as Sevillano starts to play with better leverage/pad level he'll be even more dominant at the point of attack.
