Notre Dame Commit Cam Williams Recaps Historic Performance

In this story:
When Notre Dame received a commitment from 2024 Glen Ellyn (Ill.) Glenbard South wide receiver Cam Williams in June of last year, it was viewed as a strong get for the Irish. The importance of that pickup grew during his junior season, when Williams racked up 1,022 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns on just 47 receptions, a not too shabby 21.7 yard per catch average. Williams also scored another touchdown on the ground and returned two more interceptions for scores.
Williams is now considered a borderline five-star player and one of the elite wide receivers in the 2024 class. On Friday, the Illinois star got his season kicked off to a great start, hauling in seven receptions for 153 yards and three touchdowns in the team’s 56-21 victory over Aurora East. The talented pass catcher also returned two kickoffs for touchdowns on the day, ending with five total touchdowns.

That historic day was one to remember for Williams, who got his senior season off to a tremendous start. According to the Notre Dame commit, this was more about his team.
"As a team we took care of business but had some mistakes to definitely clean up,” Williams told Irish Breakdown. "You can’t come out of a game perfect but that’s what the following week is for. Then of course I scored 5 times so morale is definitely high I'd say.”
Going into the game, Williams wasn’t sure what to expect. Season openers can always be a bit of an unknown.
"It’s the first game of the year so it can be kind of hard to judge what teams will do and try to game plan,” Williams said. "As much film from last year can only help you so much but you prepare as much as you can and that’s what we did and were successful doing it.”
During the game, things slowed down a lot for Williams. On this historic day, things were moving in slow motion. For whatever reason, Aurora East decided to kick to Williams again after he had already returned a kick for a touchdown.
According to Williams, their coach was none too happy.
"It was funny because their coach had told them to not kick it to me the second time and I was ready to go lead block for our guy in the back who I switched with,” he explained. "Sure enough it came right back to me and my eyes got big and next thing I know I was in the end zone.”
If this first performance was any indicator, Williams is poised for a dynamic senior season. He could make an argument as the top overall wide receiver in the 2024 class when it is all said and done.
Williams has seen a dramatic rise in recruiting rankings since his dynamic junior campaign. He is now a near consensus Top 50 overall recruit nationally. The On3 ranking has Williams ranked highest, currently sitting as the No. 35 overall player and No. 7 wide receiver in the 2024 recruiting class. Each platform has Williams pegged as the No. 2 player in the state of Illinois.
