The wide receiver position is coming off of arguably their best performance last weekend during their 45-7 victory against Wake Forest. That was a welcomed sight for a position that had been very up and down through the course of the season, and with a lot of work to do in order to get to a championship level.

The Irish program is set to return a lot of talent in that room next season, which will be big. They are also going to welcome several talented newcomers, none with more hype than star 2024 Glen Ellyn (Ill.) Glenbard South wide receiver Cam Williams.

The standout pass catcher is arguably Notre Dame’s top overall player in the 2025 recruiting class. Williams will also be enrolling early in January, citing his excitement for getting the next chapter of his career started.

"Sometimes I’ll be going to sleep and I’ll just be thinking about it,” Williams told Irish Breakdown. "I’ve already noticed that it’s been a couple weeks since I haven’t been playing. Those couple of months went by fast. I’m also getting that senioritis. I just want to be there. I’m going to enjoy this last month and do what I need to do to prepare, then it will be go time.”

Notre Dame is set to welcome 15 mid year enrollees, which is a program record. According to Williams, you can feel the excitement and enthusiasm for this group. They are all ready for the next chapter.

"You sense everyone else’s excitement,” he explained. "We have been having our Zoom meetings with the recruiting staff, and people who work at the university. That’s where it gets scary when you start talking to those people, but a good scary. I think everyone is ready.”

As an early enrollee, Williams is set for a fast transition. In reality, he has been preparing for a while. Williams is fully aware how important his preparation is.

"When it came to football and school, my mindset had to change even before now,” Williams said. "In the beginning of the school year, beginning of the season, I already had to have that mindset change. It’s going to be way different. It’s going to be a quick transition. I had made that adjustment mentally awhile back.

"Now that I have the time and the energy, I’ve been going to do the things physically I need to do to prepare,” he added. "I have a good set of trainers and people who are going to get me right.”

Yes, Cam Williams is talented. The minute he steps foot on campus, he has a very good argument as the most gifted pass catcher on the roster. It is his mentality, and maturity that will ultimately allow him to make an impact early on. There is one word that comes quickly for him when you talk about his early expectations.

"Just improvement, and I know that sounds really broad but I know as a player, there are a lot of things that I want to come in and fix,” Williams stated. "There are a lot of things that I am very confident that I can come in and do, even at that level. But also at that level, there are a lot of little things that you have to be able to do.

"I’ve talked to (Chansi) Stuckey about it,” Williams continued. "He knows my goals. I’d love to come in and make an impact and be what Jaden (Greathouse) was Week Zero, seeing him score two touchdowns. That would be amazing and obviously what Rico (Flores) is doing. That’s a grand goal but I feel like the little things I want to achieve will lead to that big goal.”

Williams’ rise really started during a stellar junior campaign, exploding for 1,022 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns on just 47 receptions, a not too shabby 21.7 yard per catch average. Williams also scored another touchdown on the ground and returned two more interceptions for scores.

The Chicago native has seen a dramatic rise in recruiting rankings since that dynamic junior campaign. He is now considered a consensus Top 50 overall recruit nationally. The On3 ranking has Williams ranked highest, currently sitting as the No. 24 overall player and No. 5 wide receiver in the 2024 recruiting class. Williams has earned a five-star ranking on the Industry ranking, coming in as the No. 26 overall player.
