For whatever reason, Notre Dame has had their difficulties gaining traction in the Maryland-Washington DC area from a recruiting perspective. In the 2025 recruiting class, the Irish staff is hoping to change those fortunes. There are several talented defensive backs from that area in the cycle, including Upper Marlboro (Md.) St. John’s cornerback Tariq Hayer.

The star defensive back visited Notre Dame this summer, competing even though he already had an offer. The Irish staff has made a tremendous early impression, including currently sitting as one of his top schools.

"The relationship with Notre has been getting stronger since they have been able to text and call me,” Hayer told Irish Breakdown. "I’ve gotten the chance to get to know them better, especially Coach (Mike) Mickens. We’ve been having more conversations on the regular.

"Notre Dame is one of my top schools,” he continued. "Their main message to me is how they have great sports and education. They really give you everything you need to be successful.”

With the summer winding down, and season upon us, Hayer is busy planning school visits. As he continues to garner more interest, it’ll be paramount to get Hayer back to campus.

"Recruiting has been really good recently,” he said. "I have picked up some new offers and have set up some game visits. I’m just really excited for the future.”

As of right now, Hayer has visits set for the Wisconsin game against Ohio State and the Penn State white out game. There appears to be interest in getting back to Notre Dame but there is nothing imminent right now.

It’ll be especially important for Notre Dame to get Hayer to campus considering their early standing. They currently sit as a top three school for the talented cover man.

"Some schools who have been doing a good job recruiting so far are Maryland, Notre Dame, and Wisconsin,” Hayer said. "They have been really consistent and am excited to continue building those relationships.”

Hayer is considered a consensus four-star recruit by every major recruiting platform. He peaks as the No. 89 overall player and No. 14 cornerback in the 2025 recruiting class according to 247Sports. That ranking also has Hayer rated as the top player in the state of Maryland.

The 6-0, 175-pound cover man has an already incredibly impressive offer list. Some of the top schools that have offers Hayer include the Fighting Irish, Penn State, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, Pittsburgh, South Carolina, Wisconsin, Ole Miss, North Carolina, Maryland, Minnesota, West Virginia, Louisville, Boston College, Kansas and Georgia Tech among several others.

As a sophomore, Hayer was a playmaker on the backend for St. John’s. He led the team with four interceptions from his cornerback position, including 67 interception return yardage.
