Notre Dame has made a big impact in defensive line recruiting so far in 2025, already securing commitments from Alabama pass rusher CJ May and Illinois standout Joseph Reiff. The Irish staff continues to push for another local star in Chicago (Ill.) Simeon star defensive end Christopher Burgess, who is one of the most physically gifted defensive lineman in the 2025 recruiting class.

Burgess last visited South Bend during the team’s narrow 17-14 loss to Ohio State, which was his fourth visit since being offered during the Pot of Gold offer event on St. Patrick’s Day. Since that most recent visit, Burgess’ focus has solely been on his own season. Unfortunately his games have prevented him from being able to make any other visits.

“Everything has been cool,” Burgess told Irish Breakdown. “We are still in the CPL Playoffs right now. If we win on Saturday then we are in the championship to defend our title.

“Unfortunately I haven’t been able to take any more visits,” he continued. “I feel like I have been invited to every game. All of our games are on Saturdays so that makes visiting tough.”

Behind the scenes, Notre Dame has continued to do a tremendous job making Burgess feel wanted. The communication has been consistent, and the pitch has been heard. They are at the point where they have been making a lot more depth in their relationship as well.

“The relationship with Notre Dame is good,” said Burgess. “We talk all the time and those talks are getting deep.

“There has never been a question about how much they like me as a fit into the program,” he added. “I am excited about what they are building.”

Burgess has continued to reiterate that, along with his mother, he is focused on making a great decision and not rushing. However, it’s hard not to feel great about where Notre Dame is. They have valued him tremendously and that has been well received by the Chicago star.

The 6-4, 240-pound pass rusher was a huge part of a 12-1 Simeon squad that finished off the season with a 33-30 victory over Fenwick in 2022. That talented squad outscored their opponents by a 512 to 197 point margin. Burgess was among the more talented players on the roster, including wide receiver Malik Elzy who Notre Dame recruited a bit during the 2023 cycle.

Simeon has gotten off to a bit of a slow start in 2023, but has recovered a bit, currently sitting with a 6-5 overall record. Burgess has still done his best to be the rock for the defense while being limited to six contests, recording four tackles for loss, two sacks and a fumble recovery.

The toolsy Burgess has been blowing up recently this offseason, attracting attention from some premier programs in college football. Some of his top offers so far include Notre Dame, Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, Florida, Michigan, Miami, USC, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Wisconsin, Washington, Nebraska, Colorado, Auburn, Iowa, Ole Miss, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Louisville, Boston College, Purdue and Indiana among several others.

Burgess has also seen his recruiting ranking begin to skyrocket over the last several months. Every major recruiting platform has him ranked as a four-star recruit. Rivals ranks him highest, sitting as the No. 60 overall player and No. 5 defensive end in the 2025 recruiting class.
