Quickly after 2025 Green Bay (Wisc.) Notre Dame De La Baie Academy tight end James Flanigan was offered during the Pot of Gold offer event, the legacy set up a trip to Notre Dame on March 25th. Flanigan returned on Saturday once again for the Blue-Gold Game.

Of course, the name Flanigan should be very familiar to Notre Dame fans. He is the son of former Irish defensive lineman Jim Flanigan Jr., who starred for the program from 1990-1993.

After Flanigan was a standout defensive lineman for the Irish from 1990-1993, he was selected by the Chicago Bears in the third round of the 1994 NFL Draft, parlaying that success into a ten year career with the Bears, Green Bay Packers, San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles.

The younger Flanigan heard a lot from the other visitors on campus. It gave a great insight into Notre Dame football.

"I liked meeting the other recruits and the alumni too,” Flanigan told Irish Breakdown. "They all had great things to say and it was really cool hearing some old stories from the alumni.”

The coaches have also already made a tremendous impact on Flanigan. That continued this weekend.

"I think that talking with Coach (Marcus) Freeman, (Gerad) Parker and (Gino) Guidugli was even better than last visit,” said Flanigan. "Before it was kind of more getting introduced to them but now it’s more of an established relationship and I think it will continue to get even better.”

Of course the Blue-Gold Game was an experience in itself. The early offense really impressed the talented pass catcher. Flanigan sees a lot of success in the future of the program.

"What I noticed most was the white team's offense,” he said. "Sam Hartman threw some great balls and the group seemed to click from the very start of the game. I think Notre Dame is going to be very good this year.”

It’s an easy fit. Being a legacy, Flanigan is a player that Notre Dame values tremendously early. Still, the 6-6, 225-pound standout has made it clear that he intends to let the process play out.

"I think that I need to continue looking around,” Flanigan explained. "I am still young and I think it’s a good idea for me to keep an open mind for right now. I haven’t really thought about the next step yet, just trying to enjoy this process for right now.”

Flanigan has begun hearing from several big time programs, including receiving offers from the Fighting Irish, Michigan, Wisconsin and Missouri thus far. The Wisconsin standout is rated as a four-star by 247Sports, including being pegged as the No. 167 overall player and No. 9 tight end in the 2025 recruiting class.

On the football field, Flanigan brings some massive upside. He was a two-way star for the team, making a plethora of plays at both tight end and linebacker. The sophomore standout hauled in 22 receptions for 520 yards and nine touchdowns.

On defense, Flanigan recorded 66 total tackles, seven tackles for loss and three sacks. He was selected as an All Conference performer at both positions.

He is also a standout left winger for the school’s hockey team. They are fresh off of a 28-0 record this season, which included a state championship. Flanigan is a legitimate prospect on the ice as well.
