LUBBOCK, TX — Oklahoma wide receiver pledge Ivan Carreon dominated in week one of the high school football season.

After flipping his commitment from Texas Tech to the Sooners over the summer, the 2024 prospect was in Lubbock, TX, on Friday night for the Broncos' season opener against Lubbock Monterey.

In the showdown between two West Texas high schools, Carreon put his impressive catch radius and mobility on display, bringing in six passes for over 200 yards and two touchdowns.

On Carreon's first catch of the game, the 6-foot-6 pass catcher used his speed to run right by a defender, getting open downfield for a near 50-yard touchdown strike.

"We had a route concept on my side," Carreon said about the play. "Just got open, (Broncos quarterback) Mikey (Cota) threw a great ball."

On the first play of the game's second half, Carreon caught a short pass before breaking two tackles and outrunning the rest of the Plainsmen defense to the end zone for an 80-yard score.

Also a basketball player and hurdler in track, Carreon's athleticism combined with his height and length are remarkable. While the 4-star prospect didn't make many other highlight plays, Carreon had multiple catches that resulted in first downs, proving to be a dangerous possession receiver who can easily haul in short passes over the middle and extend plays after the catch.

Unfortunately for Odessa High School, Carreon's heroics were not enough, as Lubbock Monterey took down the Broncos 44-42 behind a go-ahead field with less the 40 seconds left. Plainsmen running backs Jamarcus Smith, Dez Williams and Darron Moore all had solid performances on the ground to help lead Lubbock Monterey's offense to its highest scoring output since 2021.

The Plainsmen's late field goal was set up by a big-time catch down the field from senior wideout and defensive back Kash Lewis, who also had a productive evening. Fellow 2024 pass catcher Christian Williams also looked good for Monterey.

After the game, AllSooners spoke to Carreon about his recruitment.

Originally, Carreon was committed to Texas Tech and former Red Raiders' wide receiver coach Emmett Jones. With Jones now in Norman, Sooner fans and media speculated that Carreon may end up flipping his commitment.

The nation's No. 13 wide receiver according to ESPN, and the No. 196 overall player in the country per On3, Carreon did announce over the summer that he was in fact decommitting from Texas Tech and joining OU's 2024 class.

"Mainly the coaches. I like coach Jones a lot," Carreon said when asked about what motivated his decision. "Coach (Brent) Venables, he seems like a very down-to-earth guy, like honest, so I like that about him."

Carreon also said that he has a great relationship with Jones, who recruited and has earned pledges from the big-bodied target at now two different schools.

"We're always talking on phone calls and everything," Carreon said. "We have a good connection."

Carreon picked up his offer from Oklahoma over the summer after an impressive showing at the Brent Venables Elite Camp. At camp, Carreon used his speed, catch radius and surprisingly smooth route-running to get open and catch multiple touchdown passes in one-on-one reps.

The Broncos' standout said that he has a good relationship with multiple OU coaches, adding that the reason he went to camp in Norman this summer was because of his trust in the staff.

"Coach Venables, the way he is, talking to him," Carreon said when asked why he decided to attend the Venables Camp. "Knowing coach Jones since he was at Tech, just all the coaches (at OU), they're all really good."

Now a senior, Carreon mentioned that he is working hard to finish high school a semester early so he can be a mid-year enrollee for the Sooners.

"I'm working on it right now," Carreon said. "Most likely, I'm going to graduate in December."

If Carreon is able to get on campus in January, he will have the potential to earn playing time early in his career at Oklahoma.
