Oklahoma's Top 2024 Target Sets Commitment Date, Names Top Five

In this story:
Williams Nwaneri is one of the top prospects in the nation.
Listed at 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds, the Lee's Summit North (MO) defensive lineman is the No. 1 player in the 2024 class, according to On3. While he may not be the nation's top prospect on every recruiting service, Nwaneri is a consensus top three player and the consensus No. 1 defensive lineman in his recruiting cycle.
On Thursday evening, Nwaneri announced his top five schools and his commitment date. On Aug. 14, the elite edge rusher will choose between Georgia, Missouri, Oklahoma, Oregon and Tennessee.
Nearly 10 days away from his commitment, it appears as though the Tigers and Sooners are in the lead for Nwaneri. While Missouri may be the in-state program, OU has a few aces up their sleeve in Nwaneri's recruitment.
Not only did Lee's Summit North head coach Jamar Mozee play for Oklahoma, but Brent Venables and company already have a commitment from Nwaneri's teammate, 2025 defensive lineman Ka'Mori Moore.
Additionally, former LSN standout Cayden Green is entering his freshman year on OU's football team.
While the Sooners still have more work to do in order to land Nwaneri, building relationships at his high school will certainly aid Oklahoma in the long run. If OU can bring in the nation's top defensive lineman, it would be the second class in a row that Venables and company have brought in a 5-star edge from the Kansas City area.
Last year, the Sooners' were able to sign P.J. Adebawore, the No. 9 prospect in the 2023 class.
If Nwaneri joins OU's 2024 class, Oklahoma could finish the upcoming recruiting cycle with one of the best defensive line classes in program history. While Nwaneri himself would be one of the biggest wins Venables has achieved on the recruiting trail since joining the Sooners' coaching staff, the Lee's Summit North product could help convince David Stone, Dominic McKinley and Nigel Smith II to all join him in Norman.
