NORMAN – New Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer met with the media on Saturday following the Sooners’ Crimson Combine.

The event marked the end of spring practice and took the place of the traditional spring scrimmage – the Red / White Game – with an announced attendance of 16,316.

Players participated in individual and group drills, then took part in a 7-on-7 passing drill followed by a light 11-on-11 session.

Mateer ran plays as the No. 1 quarterback, while sophomore Michael Hawkins was the backup. They were followed by Cole Gonzales and Jett Niu.

Mateer said the installation of Ben Arbuckle’s offense he ran last year at Washington State went well this spring, and described the process by which he continues to build a rapport with OU receivers despite additional injuries throughout spring ball. Mateer said it’s been “really fun” to teach his teammates the new offense, and said now, with no coaches present, the team’s chemistry can really start to bond as the team moves into the summer months.

Mateer also praised his offensive line and tight ends and explained why he appreciates Arbuckle’s confidence in him.

John holds a bachelor's degree in Mass Communications from East Central University in Ada, OK. Born and raised in North Pole, Alaska, John played football and wrote for the school paper at Ada High School in Ada, OK. He enjoys books, movies and travel, and lives in Broken Arrow, OK, with his wife and two kids.
