OSU Basketball: Western Kentucky Assistant to Join Lutz's Staff

The Cowboys have another addition to their coaching staff with Robert Guster coming to Stillwater.

Oklahoma State has added another assistant to coach Steve Lutz’s staff.

The Cowboys announced Thursday that they have hired Robert Guster as an assistant coach for next season. Guster is following Lutz to OSU after coaching alongside him at Western Kentucky last season.

Guster is the third coach confirmed to be on Lutz’s bench next season, along with James Miller and Keiton Page.

Guster helped Western Kentucky win the Conference USA Tournament and get the program to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2013. Guster could help Lutz and OSU implement the fast-paced style the Hilltoppers played with last season.

Before joining Lutz at Western Kentucky, Guster spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at Texas State. In 2021 and 2022, he helped the Bobcats earn the best record in the Sun Belt Conference.

Guster also helped orchestrate one of the best defenses in the conference, leading the Sun Belt in scoring defense five times in his tenure with the Bobcats. At Texas State, he primarily worked with the team’s big men and oversaw recruiting for large portions of Texas.

Guster also spent 10 seasons at UTSA coaching under former OSU star Brooks Thompson and helped the team make history. The Roadrunners made the NCAA Tournament in 2011, winning a first-round game for their first NCAA postseason win in any sport.

In the team’s press release, Lutz seemed excited about bringing his assistant coach to Stillwater.

"Robert is already well-versed in the Cowboy Way, having worked 10 years under a guy OSU fans are probably familiar with, Brooks Thompson,” Lutz said. “He is a builder of strong relationships and defenses – two things that often go hand-in-hand. We'll lean on his recruiting contacts throughout the Midwest to bring in talented, high-character guys, as well as his ability to teach and motivate. Please join in me in welcoming Robert, Melissa, Alivia and Shiloh to the Cowboy Basketball Family."
