Defensive Back Davon Benjamin Fuels Oregon Freshmen Buzz With Latest Praise

The Oregon Ducks and head coach Dan Lanning have this idea in place for the highly-touted defensive back.

The Oregon Ducks face a fierce gauntlet of high-profile quarterbacks this fall. Each will especially take cues from Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza on film in attempting to find holes in the secondary.

Except coach Dan Lanning, defensive coordinator Chris Hampton and cornerbacks coach Rashad Wadood patched those holes in loading up on the 2026 recruiting class, including landing versatile four-star Davon Benjamin out of Oaks Christian High in Westlake Village, California.

Plan Coming Into Fruition for Davon Benjamin at Oregon

Benjamin destroyed his competition as a wide receiver and lockdown cornerback. But he also manned safety for a Lions team that annually attracts high-profile coaches, including Lanning, who's made trips out to the Ventura/Los Angeles County line to check out Oaks Christian talent in the past.

Yet many wonder if Lanning or even Hampton would lean into Benjamin's Swiss Army knife side out in Eugene. Lanning shared his vision for Benjamin during the Ducks' second week of fall camp.

“He's played primarily STAR for us in fall, but he's learned some other positions as well," Lannning said. "He's able to move around. I'll say this: the guy's really hungry to learn. He spends every minute, extra meetings, extra time.”

“He's, again, he's one of those guys that's obsessed with football and has a great skill set, and he's definitely going to be able to help us," he continued. "And as he continues to learn more and more, the more he grows, the more he'll be able to help his team.”

So Duck fans should love that update, as Benjamin's versatility will be put to great use down the road. The STAR spot for any defense is often reserved for the defense's most athletic defender who can impact the game in multiple areas. It sounds like Benjamin is already winning over Lanning and the Ducks' defense with his knack for dominating in more than one area on the field.

He'll add to an insanely loaded and talented secondary, which features the potential for forming a wicked duo with another freshman turning heads out in Eugene.

Benjamin looks bound to form one intimidating and dynamic duo with a five-star safety who's turning heads already.

Prized signing out of Bishop Gorman High in Las Vegas Jett Washington caught fans' attention with his uncanny athleticism already on display. More so via this easy one-handed interception he pulled off during a fall camp scrimmage on Aug. 10.

Washington lures a far more towering presence compared to the 5-11 Benjamin: by bringing a 6-5 frame onto the field. He's also known as the nephew of the late NBA legend for the Los Angeles Lakers Kobe Bryant.

Washington brings astonishing hops and ball skills to the field. Pair that with Benjamin's multitude of skills and Oregon brings one of the nation's top safety tandems down the road. Especially if both stay healthy together for future Duck seasons.

Games When Davon Benjamin Likely will Become Needed the Most

Benjamin holding the STAR/Nickel role can come in handy right away for the nation's No. 2 ranked team per the USA Today's Coaches Poll.

The season opening opponent Boise State prefers to wear down teams in the trenches and off a violent running attack. Best believe Broncos head coach Spencer Danielson will attempt a similar approach as BSU aims to redeem itself from a 2024 loss at Autzen Stadium.

But Benjamin can enter the picture to add an eighth or ninth defender in the box. Then break out into coverage when Oregon must counter star Boise State wide receiver Cameron Bates.

Boise rises as a great early test run for Benjamin. But the same can be said for the first road game against Oklahoma State, as the Cowboys are looking to run the North Texas high-powered Air Raid offense under new head coach Eric Morris. Benjamin earns a chance to hit the field early there too and hand the Big 12 representative fits with his multiple skillset.
