The Ducks are in the running for an elite talent from the Lone Star State.

Chris Hampton got off to a quick start recruiting safeties once he was hired at Oregon, landing a commitment from Ole Miss transfer Tysheem Johnson.

He's also been hard at work pursuing the top safeties in the prep ranks.

On Wednesday 2024 McKinney (Tex.) safety Xavier Filsaime placed the Oregon Ducks in his top five schools, announcing his new finalists on social media.

Oregon made the cut along with USC, Georgia, Florida and LSU.

“I went to Oregon once and when I went it just felt like a family vibe, it felt like home,” Filsaime told Hayes Fawcett of On3. “I have a good relationship with everyone there, and I’m looking forward to trying to get back out there.”

Filsaime stands at 6'1", and weighs 180 pounds. He's rated a 4-star (0.9743) prospect by the 247Sports composite, which views him as the No. 44 recruit in the country, the No. 3 safety and the No. 7 player in Texas.

His latest recruiting cutdown follows his top 11 that was released in December.

The standout defensive back visited Oregon in January and it looks like he was encouraged by what he saw from Dan Lanning and his coaching staff.

Filsaime has visited Florida and LSU, two other finalists, in the month of March. Oregon doesn't have any commits in the secondary for 2024 and the Texas safety would be a great place to start and be a big statement on the recruiting trail.

Torres' Take

Filsaime is just about as good of a safety recruit as you'll find anywhere in the country. He's far from the only safety the Ducks are pursuing, as you'll also need to keep an eye on the nation's No. 1 safety KJ Bolden, who plans to visit Oregon this spring, as well as Georgia commit Peyton Woodyard and Aaron Flowers.

A source close to the program tells me that Florida is the main competition for the Ducks in this recruitment. Dan Lanning has done a great job of building out his staff with numerous Texas connections like Will Stein, Tyler Dean and new offensive analyst Antonio Parks, who worked with Stein at UTSA.

It doesn't look like Oregon's in the lead at this point, but landing in a top five for a player of his caliber is always good news and likely puts them in a great spot to earn an official visit prior to a commitment.
