PITTSBURGH -- Under the current NBA collective bargaining agreement, college prospects who declare for the NBA Draft can retain their eligibility while training and gathering feedback from professional scouts and executives before deciding if they want to remain in the Draft or return to school. But Pitt Panthers freshman Bub Carrington isn't thinking much about that option, because he plans on staying fully committed to his dream of playing professional basketball sooner rather than later.

A release from Pitt athletics said Carrington would retain his college eligibilty but he was adamant that the goal is to be drafted this year and make it to the NBA as soon as possible.

“My intention is to be a pro basketball player in two, three months," Carrington, who will leave Pitt after one season to declare for the 2024 NBA Draft, responded when asked if he'd consider coming back to school. "That’s my plan and it’s the only thing I’m trying to do.”

Pitt star Blake Hinson tested the NBA Draft waters last spring and opted to return to school in 2024. It was a fruitful decision for Hinson, who played the best season of his long collegiate career and all but certainly elevated his own professional prospects in the process.

Carrington is a different animal, however, because he has garnered first-round and even lottery pick buzz ever since he stepped onto the court for his first game as a Panther. He has excellent size for a guard at 6'5, a feel for the game that is well beyond his years and an innate ability to make tough shots.

The option will remain open for Carrington to come back to Pitt but he was certain when he announced his decision that he is hellbent on making it to the NBA and confident he will get there.
