2023 Version Of Ethan Petry Returns In South Carolina's Series Win Over No. 3 Vanderbilt

When the then-No. 20 South Carolina Gamecocks dropped a three-game series this past weekend to the Ole Miss Rebels, a team that had only one conference series dating back to the beginning of the 2023 season, questions were raised about whether the team was beyond the point of getting things back on track, particularly at the plate. With a three-game series against the No. 3 Vanderbilt Commodores on the horizon, some worried that the season was on the verge of going sideways, Mark Kingston's squad stepped up to the plate, both literally and figuratively speaking, delivering a resounding result on Saturday by sweeping a double-header and clinching the series against a team who came into Saturday with a 19-3.

The primary catalyst behind the Gamecocks offensive outburst was preseason all-american Ethan Petry, who, while having been one of the better bats on the team again this season, seemed to be struggling to adjust to the reality that every pitching staff for South Carolina's opponents has him at the top of their scouting report. Today in Founders Park, the Gamecock faithful were treated more to the 2023 version of Petry, who reached base in seven of his eight at-bats in Carolina's doubleheader versus the Commodores, drawing four walks, hitting two home runs, and batting in four runs. Considering that Ethan's performances took place against a team like Vanderbilt, who historically pumps out MLB arms like a factory, the results today look even more impressive.

It's a huge bounce-back series victory for Kingston's team, who'll now have a chance to go for the sweep on Sunday at 1:30 PM EDT. The game will stream live on SEC Network +.
